ITEC 6324 Posting - Assignment #3

Assignment #3 for ITEC 6324
Review four (4) National Security Agency (NSA) Centers of Excellence in Information Assurance and Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) certificate programs at these member institutions. I've chosen the Naval Post Graduate School, The United States Air Force Academy, The Air Force Institute of Technology, and the United States Military Academy (better known as West Point). My choices have a decidely military focus.

Naval Post Graduate School
Center for Information Systems Security Studies and Research (CISR)

The CISR offers a Master of Science in Computer Science with a specialization in computer security. In addition, it offers Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) certificates. The CISR is approved to award the following CNSS certificates:

  • NSTISSI 4011: Information Systems Security (INFOSEC) Professionals
  • NSTISSI 4012: Designated Approving Authority (DAA)
  • NSTISSI 4013: System Administration in Information Systems Security (INFOSEC)
  • NSTISSI 4014: Information Systems Security Officer (ISSO)
  • NSTISSI 4015: System Certifiers

CNSS certificates 4011, 4013, and 4014 are all awarded upon successful completion of all the following courses:

  • CS3030 (Computer Architecture and Operating Systems for non-CS majors) or CS3010 (Computer Systems Principles for CS majors)
  • IS3502 (Computer Networks for Information Technology Management majors) or CS3502 (Computer Communications and Networks for CS majors)
  • CS3600 (Introduction to Information Assurance)
  • CS3670 (Secure Management of Systems)

CNSS certificates 4012 and 4015 are both awarded upon successful completion of all the following courses:

  • CS3600 (Introduction to Information Assurance)
  • CS3670 (Secure Management of Systems)
  • CS4680 (Introduction to Certification and Accreditation)
  • CS4685 (System Certification Case Studies)

Eligibility
Selection for the Navy fully funded graduate education program is based on professional performance, potential for promotion, and a strong academic background. This program is open to Commissioned Officers of the United States Navy, and officers serving in other branches of the US Military.

All Computer Science majors graduating from the US Air Force Academy must take at least one of the following courses:

  • CS431 - Introduction to Crytography
  • CS438 - Computer Security and Information Warfare
  • CS468 - Analysis and Design of Secure Networks (w/Cyber Defense Exercise)

Any student taking all three of the courses listed above will receive a Concentration in Information Assurance -- a designation also noted on their official transcript.

Eligibility
Admission into the United States Air Force Academy is by appointment only. Besides high academic and personnel standards, the candidate must also receive a nomination from a United States Senator for the candidate’s home state.

Center
for Information Security Education and Research

The Information Assurance Certificate Program (IACP) – Certificate for Information Systems Security. This is a graduate level program.

Professionals under National Training Standard NSTISSI No. 4011. The course subject area contains the primarily technical aspects of security: data security, computer networking and security, distributed operating systems, software protection and application development, intrusion detection systems, and cyber forensics.

Professionals under National Training Standard CNSS No. 4012. This certificate provides the required Information Assurance training for Senior Systems Managers (SSMs) of national security systems. The course subject area contains the primarily managerial aspects of security: security awareness, training, and education; policy development; risk management; resource allocation; budgeting; the role of IRM in the management of IW, vulnerability and threat assessment, planning, directing, and controlling resources.

Eligibility

Military personnel, international officers, and sponsored civilians are eligible for this program. A qualified candidate is preferred to have a major in computer science or computer engineering. As a minimum, prerequisite courses are: computer architecture, operating systems, data structures, and programming. Qualified candidates also must have completed coursework in Calculus I/II and discrete math. A GRE score of 500 verbal and 600 quantitative.

West Point has a comprehensive information assurance program designed to help build the next generation of Army leaders (specifically the Officer Corp). This is an undergraduate program.
