ITEC 5321 - Security Issue for the week

ITEC 5321
Class Assignment from 1/29/05 – Find a current issue in information technology security, write a 50 to 100 word summary and post it to the class blog.

I came across an article titled, “Microsoft to confide security woes to governments” posted on the CNET website. There is the obvious question of why the words “Microsoft” and “security” would be mentioned in the same sentence except with the phrase “doesn’t have any” in between the two. Basically, Microsoft with notify participating government agencies about security issues having to do with Microsoft’s software. Microsoft is also letting the participating governments have a look at the company’s source code. All this is happening because European, Latin American, and Asian governments have started to consider open source operating systems like Linux for their IT system needs instead of the proprietary Windows software. I would compare the United State’s current stance in the World as the same as Microsoft – it used to be that the rest of the world needed us but now they want something different. Just as other countries are following their own paths in regards to foreign policy, so too are they willing to try something new when it comes to information technology – anything but that American proprietary software.
